Shanghai is one of China’s bustling epicenters with over 24 million people in constant motion. It can be quite difficult to maneuver through deep crowds of passersby especially if you make the misguided judgment call to visit on any of China’s national holidays.
It’s easy to spend a day in Shanghai brunching in the French Concession, shopping and sightseeing on Nanjing Road and taking a quaint tour of the Yu Yuan Gardens (all while battling a sea of civilians).
But in a city where overcrowding is inevitable, sometimes the only thing necessary is to seek reprieve from the masses. I found such solace at the Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai.
As one of the newest additions to the Mandarin Oriental family, having opened in 2013, the Shanghai location is found in a quiet corner of the financial district. It boasts gorgeous views of the Huangpu River and is just a short walk from the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower.
Immediately upon arrival, your attention is drawn to the large mural in the entrance of the lobby that consists of 17k tiles and the stunning light fixtures above—a common theme throughout the hotel.
The hotel has 362 rooms of which are a perfect blend of sleek style and comfort. The Mandarin Oriental staff makes you feel right at home with subtle touches of personalization throughout your stay. Watch TV while sipping a glass of wine from the bathtub or enjoy delicious macaroons in a fluffy bathrobe. Forget to close the shades? Each room is outfitted with a control panel on the nightstand so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your bed.
If you’re really enjoying your stay, try upgrading to The Club Lounge. The benefits include an on-call butler service, hotel shuttle bus or house car, all day refreshments (including breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and evening cocktails), laundry service and more. You may also want to check out the Presidential Suite on the 25th floor that just so happens to be the largest in size throughout Shanghai. Or you can check out the 210 units in the second building that are available for a leasing service.
Head to one of the hotel’s three restaurants: Fifty 8° Grill, Yong Yi Ting or Zest, to try dishes ranging from regional to International cuisine that was created by two celebrity chefs. Afternoon tea is also available in the Riviera Lounge or you can pick up delectable sweets at The Mandarin Cake Shop. At night, head to the stylish Qi Bar for innovative cocktails either inside or outside on the terrace.
Whether your stay in Shanghai includes sightseeing or business meetings, the Mandarin Oriental Pudong provides just the right dose of style and comfort.
