Jamaica is a great Caribbean Island to explore. It has a fun culture, good food (jerk chicken and festival bread–I’m looking at you!) and because of its size, a great place to do some adventure tours too! It’s a large island with, of course, beautiful places to relax on the beach, but when you want to head out to explore the island, these tours in Jamaica are a great way to add in some fun.
I did all of my tours through Chukka Caribbean Adventures which were all prearranged for me on this trip. The company had good facilities, friendly and knowledgable guides, and had many different tours to choose from. At the time that I went to Jamaica (many years ago), they had 32 different tours.
Want something more relaxing, but different than the beach? They’ve got a river tubing tour. Want something with a little more adrenaline pumping? Try zip lining! Or try something incredibly unique–climbing a waterfall! Yep, you heard that right. You can actually climb this waterfall and it is so worth it! Check out some of the tours below!
1. Ziplining Tour
When I first did one of their zip lining tours in Jamaica, my tour was only through the tree tops. I believe they now have another option of zip lining over Dunn’s River Falls (see below for more info on Dunn’s), which would be pretty cool too.
They have a very cute area where you’ll first go to get outfitted in your zip lining gear.
Once you have your harness and helmet on, they’ll brief you on safety measures and give you a run down on how things go.
Next, you’ll hit the tree tops.
I pretty big guy standing next to me, looked over at me and nervously asked me if I thought he should do it. We hadn’t even started yet and he was sweating through his clothes. He clearly didn’t like heights and was panicking. I was all like, “You’ll be fine! You can do it! You’ll regret it if you don’t!” And next thing I know, he got stuck on the very first line and was dangling in the middle of the zip line screaming for help. One of the guides had to get out on the line and pull him to the next station! He was fine but I’m sure he didn’t appreciate my advice haha.
2. River Tubing Tour in Jamaica
If you’re looking for something fun but still relaxing, you can opt for the river tubing tour down a fun little river.
You’ll be in a small group and lazily float down the water. Though, occasionally you may run into a smaller section with a few little fast bumps, like below.
It was fun to be tucked into nature and just admire your surroundings but I have to say, when I went (some time in February I think), it. was. COLD. The water was freezing and in the shade it made it even worse haha. So something to keep in mind if you happen to go during a cooler time.
After our tubing adventure, we got a little snack of jerk chicken and festival bread!
3. Dunn’s River Falls Climb
I was about to say the Dunn’s River Falls tour was my favorite by far, but I actually enjoyed them all. It was my favorite tour though because it’s a unique adventure that you won’t really find many places. Dunn’s River Falls is a climbable waterfall and the #1 attraction in Jamaica. One of the coolest facts is that it empties right into the Caribbean Sea. You start the climb RIGHT on the beach!
The climb is 600 feet in elevation and you definitely need some water shoes for this.
Certain points had handles to help you get up and the guides are there for an extra hand or to take your pictures for you!
It’s a pretty decent hike to the top but definitely a fun experience to have! Once you’ve finished you can take your picture at the ‘finish line’!
4. Safari Tour
Probably one of the most relaxing tours in Jamaica you can do is the safari tour. And while it’s definitely different from the others, it was fun to travel around the island and learn about the plants, island and other fun facts. Plus, we got to take this super cool ZEBRA land rover.
You’ll take a drive around the area and the guide will stop to give you some fun facts and show you some different plants and their uses!
My guide was knowledgeable and fun, and I learned a lot from him!
This was also the first time I learned about how coffee is made. I had NO idea it came from a little fruit like this! Plus, the berries are sweet! Why in the world people don’t eat coffee berries for breakfast with their cup of coffee is beyond me. Anyway, they dry the fruit, roast it and it becomes a coffee bean. Mind blown.
5. Dune Buggy Excursion
The last excursion I did in Jamaica was the dune buggy ride! I love these every time. It never fails. So, it just so happened to rain RIGHT before we got to the tour place (probably from the tropical storm that blew in and stopped us from going to Negril 🙁 ) and we had to wait out the rain.
I actually thought they might cancel the tour but nope! Turns out muddy conditions are pretty awesome, though I had to throw that shirt away.
I had so much fun on this tour, rain or not. Don’t let the weather deter you! But take note and don’t wear anything you want to see again if it has rained recently. And absolutely don’t wear white shoes.
When I think of Jamaica, I think of fun Caribbean culture, relaxing on the beach and drinking rum coolers but don’t forget to have a little fun too! These tours in Jamaica are a great way to have an adventure and to see more of the island!
