Most of the beaches in Grand Cayman are longer stretches of white sand and turquoise water. But tucked away in the southwest corner of the island is where you’ll find a hidden gem known as Smith Barcadere, also known as Smith Cove or Smith Beach. Smith Barcadere is a sandy cove with little beach pockets framed by rocky ledges jutting out into the sea.
Though it’s hard to compete with the convenience of Seven Mile Beach since most of the hotels and resorts are steps away, this beach is an escape for those who want a more peaceful ambiance and seclusion.
At a glance:
- Location: Southwest corner of the island in South Sound
- Cost: Free
- Activities: Swimming, snorkeling
- Facilities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables
It’s also a scenic spot to walk along the rocky shoreline and a great location if you’re into photography.
How to Get to Smith Barcadere
Smith Barcadere is located in the South Sound on the southwestern corner of Grand Cayman. It’s a 10 minute drive from the airport and only 5 minutes down the road from George Town. And from George Town, your only a few minutes drive down the main road to the start of Seven Mile Beach.
Parking:
There’s a small parking lot right across the street. Since it isn’t as busy of a beach, there should be plenty of spaces available.
Facilities:
This is another beach that has minimal facilities available. There is a restroom and shower area near the street. There’s also a handful of picnic tables scattered around in the sand with ample trees that provide good shade. Otherwise, the beach area to the right is in direct sun.
Smith Barcadere
This is a charming little beach that is a great spot for swimming and snorkeling around the rocks. You don’t have to go far into the water to see marine life. But because this is a secluded beach, you’ll want to make sure you have your own snorkel gear as you won’t be able to rent any nearby.
There were only a handful of people here when we went so it was nice and peaceful. It’s a scenic spot and we definitely would have spent more time here if it weren’t for one thing. A man in the water was hawking up loogies right and left and spitting them in the water. It kind of grossed us out haha and we were getting roasted in the sun anyway, so we left a little early.
Otherwise, it’s a cute place to come for some relaxation, some leisurely snorkeling and to finish that book.
Good For:
People who want a quiet spot to relax; people who like to read at the beach. Great for swimming and snorkeling. Good spot to have a picnic lunch.
