Virgin Gorda is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the British Virgin Islands. The Baths is the most famous beach in Virgin Gorda and the reason so many people visit the island in the first place. It has sparkling turquoise water and giant boulders that have made it so iconic. But there are actually several beaches that look similar to The Baths, one of which is Spring Bay Virgin Gorda.
Spring Bay is a quieter, less crowed version of The Baths. It has the giant boulders and beautiful views but they aren’t bringing the tours here.
While it doesn’t have The Caves that The Baths has, it still has some crevices and hidden pools that can be found within the rocks. The Baths have a pathway that you mostly follow to get from the main beach to Devil’s Bay and Spring Bay is more of a place to explore at leisure.
At A Glance:
- Location: southwest tip of Virgin Gorda, north of The Baths
- Cost: Free
- Hours: None
- Swimming: Dependent on water conditions
- Activities: Swimming, snorkeling
- Facilities: Picnic tables, grills, playground
The sand is a powdery tan and the water a beautiful turquoise. There’s plenty of spots in the water with sandy banks but you will find some areas that are more rocky. And while the pictures look like the water is calm, it can vary by the day. The water during the winter months is typically more rough and there were some strong currents while swimming.
How to Get to Spring Bay
Spring Bay Virgin Gorda is located near the south of the island, just up the road from The Baths. There’s a small dirt road to turn down that winds you back to the parking area. It’s marked by a sign, so you can’t miss it. You’ll also see signs for the Guavaberry vacation homes, as they are right next to it. You don’t need any special car to get there as it’s flat to the parking area.
Parking:
The parking lot is large enough for several cars though it’s full of ruts and quite bumpy. We had a Jeep, so we weren’t worried about where we had to park. But you might be bumped along in a normal car especially if other cars are there and there’s limited room to turn around or avoid the ruts.
Trail:
There’s no entrance booth or fee to pay to go to Spring Bay. To get there, you’ll follow a short trail to get to the beach that’s along a flat, grassy path. The trail is about .2 miles and takes you past tropical plants and a playground area for kids.
Facilities:
Besides the small playground area, there is not much else in terms of facilities. There are a few picnic tables tucked in the rocks and some grills for cookouts. But other than that, there are no restrooms/lockers and no where to buy food or drinks.
Spring Bay, Virgin Gorda
The main part of Spring Bay is a small Cove surrounded by boulders. It’s a nice place to relax and get in the water. If you want some shade, you can throw your towel under one of the trees or against a boulder. You can find crevices where the water comes in and sections that create tunnels through the rock. It’s a fun place to explore.
If you walk along the boulders to the left side, it will take you to a longer stretch of beach. You can see some private residences right next to the sand, but all beaches in the Virgin Islands are public use.
There are several spots to snorkel as well since the rocks help keep the water calmer. Head to the left side of the beach for more snorkeling options!
Good for:
People who want a quieter beach, like to explore and don’t care about having any amenities or places nearby to get food/drinks.
